Stockholm to Luleå to Galliväre

So yesterday we boarded a plane in Stockholm and flew to Luleå, Sweden. It was pretty amazing and I took some pretty amazing pictures of the archipelago islands along the coastline from the airplane. Let me just say that the sea is about 10 inches from the landing strip of the Luleå airport! We were flying in and I was ready to use to my seat as my life preserver! William said I was acting just like the little children that were all saying, “Mom we’re going to land in the water!” Here I am 20 years older than them, literally freaking out. HONESTLY! I just can’t wait for take off, we get to take off TOWARDS the sea. Jesh. I totally loved the airport in Lulea, very spacious.

I finally got to meet William’s father Yon and his sister Emma. When I took the picture his other sister and her baby had not arrived so this is what I have. As you can see the wet eyes on Yon. He told me to quit taking William away to America.

Before dinner we went to Old Town Luleå. It was so great, so old and so much history! These are summer cabins. Unfortunately the weather was very cold and boring yesterday so the pictures don’t capture the true essence of the place. These cabins are so small and cute!

This building was the old town hall of Luleå. You can see how old it is! 1774! I couldn’t believe it!

There was the most amazing old church! It was closed because it was a “red day” in Sweden, a what we would call a national holiday so everything was closed.

I can’t get over how old everything is! This was the entrance to the church courtyard. It was so beautiful.

Here is the whole entrance to the church!

On the grounds there was a tomb house or whatever you call it for a famous knight of Sweden!

The writing at the top is written in old Swedish writing from what Yan, was telling me.

I just had to show you how amazingly huge the doors were to the church. I couldn’t believe it.

Same with the windows! Can you believe back in the 1700’s that they could build something so huge?!

Amanda you’ll LOVE this building…

The town/city is all built around the church… religion was very important to the Swede’s back in the day and so everything was centered around the religion.

We went out to a fancy, very Swedish dinner. It totally beat TGI Fridays, something I promise none of you have had before. We went out for Chinese food! Talk about some sheer disappointment. Maybe it is a good thing we have not gone to get Swedish food because I am not excited for reindeer meat. Today William cut me a piece of Swedish reindeer jerky, let me tell you, it is NOT jerky if when you cut a piece, blood is on the cutting board!!! At the Chinese restaurant, I could not figure out how you ordered your Chinese food so I just opted for pizza. Now let me tell you, the “Americana” pizza was truly my favorite, there is nothing more American than artichokes, curry and cheese. Something pretty hilarious is that in Sweden, you are considered cheap if you ask for a box to put your left over food in. Not knowing this, I ask for a box to put the rest of my pizza in, they scrambled to find something to put my pizza in. I see the guy coming towards me with the most FANCY pizza box, as you can see…

After dinner and meeting more of the Winsa family we drove the 2 ½ hour drive to Gellivåre. Oh this town is so small but so beautiful!!! The next day we went exploring...

Check out this local bank…

I can not exactly remember what this painting was about but it was pretty cool, it was the Laplandish circle of life…

After it stopped snowing, yes SNOWING, William told me I had to try some Swedish ice cream. This stuff was AWESOME and whatever the candy was on my cone was awesome!!!

We walked all around downtown Gellivåre which is pretty cool. I am starting to really fall in love with the old churches here. This is all white and really pretty. I uploaded it sideways because when you put it right side up the church shrinks a bit and doesn't look as grand...

Further down the road along the river was what was called the 10 cent church. It was for beggars and the homeless to come and worship!

I gotta tell you that there is the coolest door ever in Williams home that goes from the entry way into the family room!

Haha also there are two really weird things about the bathrooms in Sweden!

1.) you have to PAY to use the toilets in public!!!!!!!!! Like there is a man who stands there and takes your money and pushes a button to let you in. WRONG!!!! So WRONG!!!

2.) There is no handle you use to flush the toilet. It took me a good minute in the bathroom to figure out how to flush the dang toilets, then finally I figured it out…

Lucky for you my battery finally died on my camera so we went home! I bought a brand new camera before we left America. This battery has lasted a whole week with me playing it 24/7! It was only $150 and all my pictures have taken the most amazing ever!

Well I hope you all are having fun. Don’t know who is reading this but if you do leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

Amelia, I love this. How lucky to have those who actually live there show you everything. So much better than a touristy tour! Keep up the blog. We are loving it!
