Malmberget and LKAB

Today William and I drove just 5 minutes to the other side of town to a place called Malmberget. The town was where Gallivare began and the city has kept the original buildings from when the 1st mine workers lived in the area. This area is called Kakstan.

What is pretty interesting is that in 2009 the homes and buildings (which there isn't much of anymore) will be relocated and demolished. The mining is currently taking place under the city and by 2015 nothing of the city will be left. Several years ago they began digging in the ground and found that the deeper and deeper they went the more valuable the land was, so they kept digging. Now they have mined everything they can and are now starting in a new area and filling in this giant hole. However because of the value of the iron they will tear down the city as I said and relocate everybody so they can begin in 2009 digging in and creating another massive hole. It's incredible really and sad at the same time!

The hole is visible from space:
